History
1977 – BECKER PROJECT BEGINS
When Helmut Becker spearheaded the Becker Project in 1977, an ambitious initiative that introduced over 30 different grape varieties to the Okanagan Valley, he demonstrated that European reds could not only endure but flourish in this region.
1993 – INTRODUCTION OF BORDEAUX VARIETIES
In 1993, Harry McWatters identified the potential of Becker Vineyard for cultivating late-ripening Bordeaux grape varieties. Within that year, the inaugural planting of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc vines commenced in the southern Okanagan region. Subsequently, Syrah was also incorporated into the vineyard's cultivation.
1996 & 2005 – ESTABLISHMENT OF PHANTOM CREEK VINEYARD AND KOBAU VINEYARD
In 1996, Viticulture expert Richard Cleave pioneered this vineyard, and since then, it has been widely recognized as one of Canada’s most outstanding single vineyards, producing premium wines consistently.
The history of Kobau Vineyard traces back to 1929 when it operated as an apple orchard. In 2005, the recognition of its considerable potential led to the initiation of grapevine planting, primarily focusing on varieties from the Cabernet family, Viognier, and Syrah.
2016 - ACQUISITION OF VINEYARDS BY BAI FAMILY
Fueled by a deep passion for Bordeaux-style wine, our founder, Richter Bai, acquired both the renowned Becker Vineyard and Phantom Creek Vineyard, thus laying the cornerstone for the remarkable legacy of Phantom Creek Estates.
2020 - GRAND OPENING
Phantom Creek Estates welcomes wine enthusiasts from around the world as it opens its doors in 2020. Shortly thereafter, our restaurant also commences service, offering an exquisite culinary experience to complement our exceptional wines.
2021 - ORGANIC CERTIFICATION
In recognition of our unwavering commitment, all vineyards at Phantom Creek Estates achieved organic certification in 2021 by Ecocert.
